– According to a recent study, 80 percent of teachers surveyed said that investing in nurseries is key to improve early speech and language skills, while one in seven of them believe that poor language abilities during the early years has a lifelong impact. On the other hand, 78 percent of the teachers believe that many pupils are unable to catch up due to the early language gap that drags down school results and makes it difficult to provide a successful curriculum for all students.

– “This poll show the shocking impact of so many children arriving at school without the basic speech and language skills,” said Gareth Jenkins, director of UK Poverty at Save the Children. “It’s not good enough to wait until children are at school and already falling behind their peers. Early literacy and communication skills are fundamentals to later success in life,” said Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA). Only omitting to mention the so important numeracy skills, much too often neglected in early childhood education.
