– Everything we do online today may be recorded and stored with no expiration date and no simple “erase” button either and there is nothing we can do about it, this is “Data Permanence”, the hallmark of the digital era.

– It is because of data permanence that we are now vigilant about posting a photo online or making sure that a website is secure before entering any password or any personal details. We even have to ponder on whether an offhand comment on a message board might raise the eyebrows of a would-be employer in 20 years.

– Who would have guessed that parents need to talk about all of this with their children, all of the issues related to preserving privacy and security online — before they even have the first conversation about sex?
