Grab a chance to win PHP 5000, PHP 2000, or PHP 1000 (PHP 5000 is currently worth around $86) with MATHnimals! How? By joining the competition running from June 1 to August 31, 2024.

All children who are enrolled in the Arcanys Early Learning Foundation (AELF) program receive a MATHnimals card game. The MATHnimals Preschool Math card game or book allows young children to learn to count with their parents and preschool teachers, and to play SUMUP-TO-10 and SUMUP-TO-20. However, for parents or early childhood educators who don't own a pack of MATHnimals game cards, you can create the 44 cards yourselves. It's a really fun drawing, coloring, and cutting exercise for the whole family!

This is what gave ChildUp the idea of organizing a MATHnimals competition. Intended primarily for followers of the AELF Teachers and Parents' Hub and ChildUp Early Education Facebook pages, it is actually open to everyone. The three families who make the most interesting deck of cards win and will receive PHP 5000, PHP 2000 and PHP 1000, respectively, from ChildUp Early Education (the jury will be made up of members of both ChildUp and AELF teams).

HOW DO YOU GET THE CHANCE TO WIN?

1. Make the following 44 cards (approximately 7 x 10 cm, on fairly thick paper or cardboard). These are necessary to play SUMUP. Make sure the numbers are written in color (but not necessarily the same colors as on the original MATHnimals cards) on one side, and the corresponding animals on the other side. Since it's not so easy to draw animals, you can choose to cut and paste pictures of them instead.

2. Send (one or two) photo(s) to mathnimals@childup.com showing both sides of the game cards you made (like in the image at the bottom of this post), with your child's (or children's) first name(s) and age(s), as well as your last name, home address, and email address. Please note that if you send us photos, you agree to automatically give us permission to post them for free (along with your child's first name - the rest will remain confidential).

REMINDER FOR SUMUP-TO-20 GAME RULES

SUMUP-TO-20 is an exciting game developed by ChildUp Early Education to teach young children to count to 20. This game utilizes a deck of 44 cards selected from the MATHnimals series. If you don't have a pack of MATHnimals game cards, you can create the 44 cards with your children - a really fun drawing, coloring, and cutting exercise!

The deck should contain 4 sets of 11 cards with numbers in LARGE, BOLD print - from 0 to 10 - on one side, and animals from the first 4 MATHnimals collections drawn or pictures pasted on the other:

  • 10 Farm Animals + card 0 without any animals
  • 10 African Mammals + card 0 without any animals
  • 10 Birds + card 0 without any animals
  • 10 Aquatic Animals + card 0 without any animals

Setup, Gameplay, and How to Win
  1. SUMUP-TO-20 can be played by 2, 3, or 4 players.

  2. Players draw lots (like picking straws or rock-paper-scissors) to see who goes first. Player-1 shuffles the deck of 44 cards, numbers face up. Player-2 cuts the deck.

  3. Picking cards from the top of the deck, Player-1 deals one card to each participant in sequence (numbers face up, but players can count the animals on the other side at any time). This process repeats, with the cards laid out in rows in front of each player.

  4. Players use ANY of their own cards to race and be the first to get the EXACT SUM of 20 (numbers or animals). So speed matters!

  5. As soon as a player thinks she/he has the correct sum for the current round, she/he says “Sumup!” and brings forward the respective cards, adding aloud the numbers or animals on the cards up to 20. If the total is correct, the player wins the round and earns 20 points (the parent/teacher should keep a tally of the points). If the total is wrong, the player is eliminated from the round. The first player who wins 5 rounds (5 x 20 points = 100 points) wins the whole game, along with a small reward that should be decided at the start of the game.

  6. SUMUP-TO-20 is not an easy game for children taking their first steps in math and just beginning to discover numbers. For something less difficult, they can start playing SUMUP-TO-10 instead. In this case, the goal for each round is to get the EXACT SUM of 10, with animals or numbers face up.
